keep out for my own good

an inspirational entry by a rebel who thrives within boundaries

When I was young I spent many weekends at my friend’s farm. Her parents own a lot of land that we loved to explore. One of our adventures led us to a beautiful pasture — land that her Dad had told us was off limits to us. It was even surrounded by a barbwire fence to keep us out.

One day we decided to go where we had no business going. We took turns holding apart the fence as we each carefully crawled through to the forbidden land. Our rebellious adventure was short lived as we spent our time constantly watching for her dad. We decided to return to our land of freedom, but as I was trying to crawl back to the other side my friend’s foot slipped. Her movement released the fence and the barbwire came up and snatched some skin off my left forearm. To this day my arm bears a scar that is a reminder that when boundaries are crossed you can get hurt.

Recently Casting Crown’s lead singer, Mark Hall wrote a book called, Your Own Jesus: a God Insistent on Making it Personal. While scanning an excerpt from the book, one sentence Mark wrote caught my eye that supports our need for godly boundaries, “I have a saved spirit but I still think with a lost brain.”

When a situation arises, your feet won’t take you places you don’t belong, if you have boundaries. Your thought life won’t take you on a trip of ungodly thinking, if you have boundaries. I have lived life with the motto, “You only live once,” and I can tell you that those are the days when my heart was filled with regret. Satan has unspoken permission to have free roam of your heart and he will take whatever piece of it you are willing to give him, if you have no boundaries.

This carefree girl who used to balk at restrictions now sees that boundaries don’t restrict me; they actually allow me to live in freedom. As Mark Hall said, we think with lost brains. That is why we must memorize and be in God’s Word daily.

So, today sweet Girlfriend, commit yourself to leading a life with boundaries that result in pleasing your King. He loves and adores you and wants to lead you on a path of righteousness.

Let Him.

I have similar physical scars on my arm from moving outside of the boundaries. They are healed burn scars. I had never thought of them from a spiritual stand point that way, but now I will. Thank you for this beautiful reminder.

A great story!
There was a cottage next to my house that I grew up in and it was very intriguing. One day my friend and I wanted to check it out, so I told mom that we were going to collect leaves out by the shale bed, which wasn’t to far from the cottage.

As we walk out the door mom told us not to go near the cottage, of course we didn’t listen and the next thing I remember I was laying in the creek on my back.
I was going down the bank, grabbed on to a branch that was attached or so I thought to the tree. You know the start of the story…my parents found out!
Oh, I ended having a concussion.

Boundaries are good, we just need to listen :(

love and hugs~Tammy

Great message, Lelia. Mark Hall’s quote. I definitely have a lost brain. The verse in 1 Cor. 6 sure does apply to this, huh?

Leila thank you for sharing your story. I recently (or continually) have struggled with boundaries. As I read your article this paragraph rang true in my life in so much that I must write it out on a notecard. Thank you!

Samantha~so glad you came by!
gms~God is so awesome! I loved that He has showed you something new this week!
Tammy~I think I’ve had a few “spiritual concussions” in my life! I’m so hard headed! :)

Paula~Author Mark Batterson shared on his blog, http://evotional.com/2009/11/permissible-vs-beneficial.html
about this very thing, using that same verse. Very powerful!

Kimberly O~I love when God speaks right to what is going on in our lives. This week has been extremely hard for me in the very area I shared with. Amazing how our enemy will try to take us out in the very area we’re trying to help others with. We have a relentless enemy, that’s for sure. I’ll be praying for you!
Here is a video that my husband & I watched this morning that I found very encouraging. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YDSgZ5c3iw&feature=player_embedded

Stacy~ you always bless me!

Ladies…this life here is tough. We are all going to be faced with stuff. If it were easy we would have no reason for a Savior. The saving He does is continuous because as Mark Hall said we think with a lost brain. Continue to seek Him and continue to come to She Seeks for help and encouragement and to share your hearts and struggles.
All these women involved with SS really have a heart for you.
We’re all just those “been there, done that” kind of Girls! ;)

love,
Lelia

Lelia, you know I love you…don’t you?

I’ve def been there done that too. I love how you say you’re a rebel that thrives within boundaries. I think that adequately describes me. :)
